The UK’s Medicines regulator, the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), is considering whether to approve the first dose of a new medication for erectile dysfunction (ED).
The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is now considering the decision, which is being taken after a two-day public consultation.
The MHRA said it was reviewing the application of the drug for safety and efficacy and will take a decision at the end of the week.
Viagra Connect and its generic equivalent, sildenafil (Viagra), are the most popular brand-name ED drugs in the UK, and are the most widely prescribed medicines in the world. Sildenafil was approved for the treatment of heart failure in 2017.
The decision is likely to affect the availability of more than half a million more sildenafil tablets and the availability of over-the-counter (OTC) versions of the drug, which are expected to be available by the end of the year.
The MHRA has been in contact with several health-care practitioners to discuss the situation, including those who prescribe sildenafil for patients with heart failure.
The MHRA is working with GPhC to develop an update on the safety and effectiveness of the first-line treatment for patients with heart failure, known as ‘QT prolongation,’ for patients with a history of sudden cardiac death.
“Sildenafil remains the most popular medication in the UK, with over 50 million prescriptions written in the UK every year. However, the availability of generic sildenafil has made it challenging for some people to obtain sildenafil,” the GPhC said in a statement.
“Sildenafil is not the only medication that is not suitable for people with heart failure,” the statement said.
“We are also reviewing the potential impact of the drug on the health of patients who have had a heart attack within the past 14 days.”
Viagra Connect is already available without a prescription in some countries, including the UK.
The GPhC said it is reviewing the application of the drug for safety and efficacy.
“When a drug is approved for use, it is safe and effective for a given patient and it may not be appropriate or suitable for all patients. Therefore, it is important that all stakeholders involved in the approval process are well-informed and that all patients are advised to follow their healthcare providers’ advice,” it said.
The MHRA said it would take the decision on the drug’s approval after a two-day public consultation.
“While this decision is being taken after a two-day consultation with the GPhC, it is likely to take place shortly,” it added.
Viagra Connect could be taken by all men over the age of 18.
A GPhC spokesman said: “We are working with a number of health-care practitioners to develop and deliver a range of medications, including the first-line treatment for patients with heart failure.
“Our latest assessment is that patients taking sildenafil for heart failure should be advised to consult their doctor and follow their healthcare providers’ advice on the use of Viagra Connect.”
The application for Viagra Connect is currently awaiting the GPhC’s decision.
